Course Planning

What are my First Year Courses?

There are seven core course requirements in the first year. In addition to your core courses, you can choose to take three electives in your first year. Though you will eventually have to complete your electives to graduate, you do not have to complete the electives in your first year.

  • Students seeking a Bachelor of Science Degree (BSc) should complete MACM 101. Students seeking a Bachelor of Arts Degree (BA) should complete MATH 130.  If you earned below a “B” in Principles of Mathematics 12 you may need to take supplementary pre-requisite math courses.  For information on math pre-requisites go to http://www.siat.sfu.ca/undergrad/faq/math.
  • If you earned below 75% in English 12 you will need to complete additional literacy requirements once at SFU.  You will need to take IAT 103W once these are met.  More information is available at www.sfu.ca/ugcr/For_Students/New_Admissions_Standards/English_Competency.html.
  • IAT courses are available only in Surrey. Other courses may be completed at any SFU campus.
    • If you wish to complete your degree in 4 years you need to complete 10 courses per calendar year (divided at your discretion between Fall, Spring and Summer terms).  Many students take 4 in Fall, 4 in Spring, and 2 in Summer.  We don’t recommend more than 5 courses in a semester.
